In mid October, 2011 over 50 captive bred exotic animals including tigers, lions, leopards, bears, wolves and monkeys were released by their owner before he took his own life. Many of these animals had only a few hours of terrifying freedom before being shot to death. We can only hope that this event will catalyze Ohio –and the Federal Government– to ban private ownership of exotic animals AND shut down exotic animal auctions.

While the 7-year-old tiger was being restrained by the sanctuary’s owner, Doug Billingsly, it turned and severely bit Hilderbrand, who later died of her wounds.

Story:
Mica Craig said the reptile pounced as he was shopping at the store in the north-western US state of Washington. The 47-year-old stamped on the serpent and was later treated at hospital with anti-venom, after his hand suffered serious swelling.
Wal-Mart apologised, and said it was investigating how the snake had entered the store in the city of Clarkston.
Kayla Whaling, a spokeswoman for the chain, said: "At this point, it appears to be an isolated incident. "We are working with a pest management team, which is conducting a sweep of the property to ensure there is no additional rattlesnake activity."
Another customer, Maria Geffre, told Reuters news agency the snake was at least 1ft (30cm) long with four rattles.
Mr Craig said the serpent attacked as he reached down to brush away what he thought was a stick from a bag of mulch. The purchase was intended for his marijuana plants, which Mr Craig said he was licensed to grow for medical reasons.

GEORGETOWN, Guyana (AP) — A mother of eight has died in the South American country of Guyana after she was attacked by a swarm of Africanized bees. Police said Friday that 47-year-old Munia Sanchara was attacked while picking mangoes from a tree at her house in the coastal community of Cane Grove. Police said she was declared dead after arriving at a hospital in the capital of Georgetown.
Guyana has reported several fatal bee attacks in recent years. Africanized bees from South Africa were introduced to Brazil in the late 1950s for a crossbreeding program and some accidentally were let loose.

Coyote attacks toddler in Weymouth (MA)
WEYMOUTH — Police are searching for a coyote that bit a young girl’s head as she was walking with her grandmother in South Weymouth on Wednesday.
Capt. Joseph Comperchio said the 2-year-old girl suffered non-life threatening injuries, including a laceration on her head, after the animal bit her at about 11:30 a.m. on Clarendon Street. Comperchio said Weymouth officers and the state Environmental Police are still searching the area for the animal. The girl was taken to a local hospital for treatment.
Comperchio said the grandmother thought the coyote was a dog when it began approaching. It then bit the girl and ran away when the grandmother screamed.
“It left the area, and we’re looking for it as we speak,” Comperchio said. Comperchio said there is some concern the animal may be rabid since coyotes usually avoid people, especially during the daytime.

Spider blamed for interstate crash
FREEPORT, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Police say a spider apparently caused an Edgecomb woman to crash her car on Interstate 295 in Freeport Monday.
Susan Sefcik told investigators that she lost control of her 2007 Jeep when she swatted at a spider that lowered itself in front of her face as she was driving. The Jeep rolled several times and hit a tree.

Brighton (MA, USA) squirrel's dying act is to bite bartender
Boston — At 7:15 a.m. on Sunday, July 17, a 32-year-old unmarried bartender came to the police station to report that he had just been bitten by a squirrel in front of his neighbor's house on Wade Street in Brighton.
According to police, the man found the animal on the ground and said it appeared to be dying. He allegedly tried to put the animal in a tree to give it a "dignified death," but it bit him, then died. Police said animal control would follow up on the matter.

A wild otter attacked a farmer in a rampage across a village yesterday. The furry beast pounced on farmer Joe Burke and bit his hand before he managed to trap him in a canvas sack.
But the creature then chewed through the bag and started munching on Joe's van.

Fatal snakebite in West Australia
First fatal snake bite in West Australia for quite some time happened this morning (Wed Dec 1, 2010). A 42-year old man from the WA town of Gingin was bitten on the toe by a juvenile Gwardar (Pseudonaja nuchechis) whilst working on his computer. Crucially, he didn't go to hospital. Friends found him already unconscious 2 hours later and took him to hospital, but he died. He probably didn't think it was necessary to get help straight away because the snake was a baby; not realizing that all elapids, including the Gwardar, are lethally venomous as soon as they hatch from their egg.

Large jellyfish stings 100 beachgoers in N.H.
RYE, N.H. — New Hampshire authorities say about 100 people have been stung by a large jellyfish at a state park in Rye, and about six children and an adult were taken to a hospital. Wallis Sands State Park Manager Ken Loughlin told the Portsmouth Herald that lifeguards spotted the jellyfish, which was described as the size of a "turkey platter" and weighing nearly 50 pounds.
Paramedics were called to the popular beach at 2 p.m., after several children and adults were stung in the water. Lifeguards asked swimmers to stay out of the water as some of the victims were treated at the beach and others were taken to the hospital.
The jellyfish was destroyed.

Kathy Baker was taking her daily walk through her Shawondasee Road neighborhood Tuesday afternoon when something flashed by her face and cut the left side of her head. The injury was severe enough to send her to the hospital, where doctors cleaned the wound and gave her a tetanus shot. Baker immediately knew what hit her - the talons of the red-tailed hawk that police say has attacked at least five people in the neighborhood since summer.

A Wellesley family found a surprise Sunday afternoon while unpacking from a trip to Italy: A stowaway scorpion. The aggressive arthropod stung one person, who sustained slight injuries, Wellesley police said. Around 3 p.m., Wellesley police were called to a home where a family member had captured a baby scorpion that had apparently hitched a ride in the family’s luggage.

Story:
Mica Craig said the reptile pounced as he was shopping at the store in the north-western US state of Washington. The 47-year-old stamped on the serpent and was later treated at hospital with anti-venom, after his hand suffered serious swelling.
Wal-Mart apologised, and said it was investigating how the snake had entered the store in the city of Clarkston.
Kayla Whaling, a spokeswoman for the chain, said: "At this point, it appears to be an isolated incident. "We are working with a pest management team, which is conducting a sweep of the property to ensure there is no additional rattlesnake activity."
Another customer, Maria Geffre, told Reuters news agency the snake was at least 1ft (30cm) long with four rattles.
Mr Craig said the serpent attacked as he reached down to brush away what he thought was a stick from a bag of mulch. The purchase was intended for his marijuana plants, which Mr Craig said he was licensed to grow for medical reasons.

Africanized Bees Kill Mother of 8 in Guyana
GEORGETOWN, Guyana (AP) — A mother of eight has died in the South American country of Guyana after she was attacked by a swarm of Africanized bees. Police said Friday that 47-year-old Munia Sanchara was attacked while picking mangoes from a tree at her house in the coastal community of Cane Grove. Police said she was declared dead after arriving at a hospital in the capital of Georgetown.
Guyana has reported several fatal bee attacks in recent years. Africanized bees from South Africa were introduced to Brazil in the late 1950s for a crossbreeding program and some accidentally were let loose.

Coyote attacks toddler in Weymouth (MA)
WEYMOUTH — Police are searching for a coyote that bit a young girl’s head as she was walking with her grandmother in South Weymouth on Wednesday.
Capt. Joseph Comperchio said the 2-year-old girl suffered non-life threatening injuries, including a laceration on her head, after the animal bit her at about 11:30 a.m. on Clarendon Street. Comperchio said Weymouth officers and the state Environmental Police are still searching the area for the animal. The girl was taken to a local hospital for treatment.
Comperchio said the grandmother thought the coyote was a dog when it began approaching. It then bit the girl and ran away when the grandmother screamed.
“It left the area, and we’re looking for it as we speak,” Comperchio said. Comperchio said there is some concern the animal may be rabid since coyotes usually avoid people, especially during the daytime.

Spider blamed for interstate crash
FREEPORT, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Police say a spider apparently caused an Edgecomb woman to crash her car on Interstate 295 in Freeport Monday.
Susan Sefcik told investigators that she lost control of her 2007 Jeep when she swatted at a spider that lowered itself in front of her face as she was driving. The Jeep rolled several times and hit a tree.
Sefcik and her husband George suffered minor injuries in the crash. Both were wearing their seatbelts, and police say that "quite probably saved their lives".
